Controlling Access
A system to allow graduated access to protected pages, files and data is a fundamental part of any members website.
DNN provides a strong and flexible set of inter-related controls to easily secure any page or part of your ClubWebs site.

Most websites use a "Role" system to define access.
What Is A Role?
A role can be seen as a "key" that you can make and assign to the profiles of individuals or groups of people.
Each page and module has a panel to allow your roles to be selected - thus restricting or allowing access.
Its easy, quick and flexible.
A "user" with a login and password has no specific access without a "Role" the are simply a registered user..
An access role is added as a separate process and may be changed or removed without impacting the users passwords.
A user or a page may have more than one role associated with it.
A role may be set to run inside a date range or may be a subscription role that attracts a cost.
Roles also provides a means to select groups of "users" within a role and gain information on that group from the database or communicate with that group.

Roles can be made and edited by administrators at any time.
This screen shows a set of roles for a typical club.
The purpose of these roles is to allow graduated access to pages and content.

Roles can fulfil other purposes too.
The roles below are about communication choices and allow email lists to be adjusted.
Members of this site may change these choices on their profile page. Doing so assigns or un-assigns these roles.

A role can be assigned to a user automatically or can be switched on / off.

Access roles can aslo be seen as security codes which are added to the "Users" profile.
Roles can be added to users profiles "in bulk".
The next images show how quick it is to add for an individual, such as a  new member of staff.
First we look up the person in the DNN User Accounts and click the padlock (roles) icon.

Here we are on the role selection screen adding a choice role to my test account.
You will see that 3 roles have already been assigned and also that you can set a date range to roles effectively this is "subscription".

After clicking Add Role you're done.

Applying a role to a page or part of page.
All pages or modules have a panel like the one below in their settings page.
In the image below Committee and Staff may view a page but only staff may edit or add new data.

At the foot of each panel you can also add named user to the list above without needing to assign a main role.
DNN provides all you need to manage access.

 Features & Facilities
DNN is Modular
It comes with many useful "modules" that provide functionality and features.
A ClubWebs site makes use of the best of these and also uses 3rd party modules to augment  the standard DNN feature list.
Non technical pages on some key features that a ClubWebs DNN site provides can be found to your left /  selected below.
