Content Management System (CMS)
Allows you to add pages with automatic menu generation, add new content, add files, and generally manage content.
CMS is a "front line" task so the tools need to be well developed and easy to use.

The Content Management System is the key to your control of your website.
It may look a bit daunting at first but all tasks break down into smaller ones and, like many procedures, after you have done it you will gain confidence and see just how easy it all is.
Operational Note:
A CMS moves costs.  If you previously had your website company add new content this cost will move to you in terms of staff time.
Please see
This image shows the DNN Control Panel. You see this anytime you login as a full administrator.
The control panel allows you to select from a range of CMS tasks.
As you can see the CP is divide into 3 sections, Pages, Modules & Common Tasks.
You can shrink the CP out of your way and also put the website into 3 view modes.
View - as a user sees
Edit - the page is fully exposed and all features are ready to edit
Design - A rarely used view to hide all content.

Site - Takes you to page controlling some basic site settings.
Help - Takes you Online Help at DNN
Solutions - The market place at DNN
The other 3 are dealt with in other articles
Users - See Membership Profiles
Roles - See Controlling Access
Files - See File Manager
The page functions are more or less obvious although import and export are not quite what you may think.
That aside lets make a new page.
When we do this the CMS automatically makes a new menu item.

Click Add and the New Page Set-Up loads.
The remainder of this page shows how to add a new page and then how to add a Text/HTML module.

As you will see its quite straightforward. You name the page and supply information for the search engines.
In Parent page you can set which menu section to put your new page under and also make a new page from a template - really useful for making it easier and quicker for admins.
In "Permissions" we can set who can see or edit the page.
(These settings are covered here - Controlling Access )
Usually you set the page so that it cannot be seen until you have put your information on it.

Finally you can copy an existing page.
The New Page set-Up also allows you to define other things such as the pages style and if it should be set to display inside a date range.
Finally we click OK and the page reloads into our new page.

The new page shows the "Target Panes".
Content / modules are placed into target panes when the page is requested.
A control on each module allow it to be moved from one target pane to another.

The next thing to do is put some content on the page.
Perhaps the most commonly used module is the Text/HTML module being selected to go into the Content Pane in the image below.

And here we see the empty Text/HTML module on the page.
At this point we move into a description of the Text/HTML module.

It has taken a lot longer to read all this than it would to actually do it.
To see the DNN CMS in action give the Video Guides Page a look.
